Westminster, just 30 miles northwest of Baltimore and 565 miles north of Washington, is the site of the Westminster Fallfest, usually held in September. From this 240-year-old town and county seat, it's relatively close proximity to Gettysburg, Pa., Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., helps account for the 32 percent increase in residential growth over the past decade, making Carroll County the fourth fastest growing county in Maryland.
Civil War buffs will find a driving tour that traces the movement of Union and Confederate soldiers through Carroll County, while providing an historical perspective of the days leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg.
Nearby Taneytown is another site where Civil War enthusiasts can witness the war re-enactment, along with other activities that bring history to life amidst the seemingly untouched landscape of lush farmland and frenziless living.
Carroll County's eight towns each exhibit a unique personality in their Main Street selections, from antique shops and boutiques to book stores and art galleries. True to its promise, Carroll County offers a peaceful alternative to the hustle and bustle of its neighboring cities. It's a place to call home for those seeking a slower pace and where "you can do what's important, not what's expected"
